Don't take kidneys for granted

Whenever I'm in a new rotation, I always think what would I do if I have these disease... What would you do if your kidneys fail? Seeing these patients coming in three times a week for dialysis... how much time... how restrictive their diet is... how much complications they have- just so difficult.

We always encourage fruits and vegetables, but not so easy for these patients- looking at potassium (usually in veg and fruits) and phosphorus (in everything)... What would you do? You can no longer eat whatever you want...

I really enjoyed this rotation as I got to interact with the same patient several times and you can really build a good relationship with your patients. I really enjoyed to see how your lab is reflective of your compliance to your diet and some medication. I really enjoyed working with the physicians there; they are all so easy going!

Still need to improve on my counseling skills- always get a diet recall because that is basic to learn more what the patient eats, and then you can help them. I have a patient today is somewhat difficult who goes off tangent for several times. My preceptor said I am too sensitive to the needs of my patient and I allow them to go off tangent and go with their flow. In some sense, I should direct back to the main purpose of why I am there... always go in with a purpose and agenda - to help the patient... like to better help you, I would need to get a full recall. That gives me a better idea... I really should have known that from the beginning.

Very excited that Peds is next!
