Day 83: Day 27 at MOWI -- HAIL Visits
HAIL - Healthy Aging Independent Living - visits went very well. I learnt more about the HAIL program. The purpose of the program is to keep people in home being healthy and independent, mostly to work with Diabetic patients, but not necessarily. They would either be at moderate risk, high risk or already have them. The HAIL visit took up my whole day and we went to 6 clients. I was exposed to different types of clients. I got to see Lynn (R.D.)'s style of consulting. She is very patient with every client. She listens very well and tries not to cut people off. When a client talks about someone else, Lynn would say but I want to learn more about you. She always uses analogy like body is like a car... you need fuel...etc. She has great tips and advices as well.
A man was 60 something year old. He was very stubborn and frustrated with his life. He is diabetic, but he does not take his medicine regularly. He checks blood sugar but he thinks these numbers are not meaningful. Basically Lynn (RD) tried so hard to get information out of him, but it was impossible. He could go on with another story of his life... and become all frustrated.
I really enjoyed the last three visits. The first one was a 92-year old lady. She sees well, hears well, eats well (all her natural teeth are still here!) and walks well! She is in good health except she has hypertension and swollen ankles. She knows how to eat well and does her daily exercise. She is positive about things even though she has a daughter who is fighting cancer now. The lookout of your life is what going to get you far in life. The positive energy from her was inspiring. By the end of the visit, she came up and hugged me and said, "I hope you learn a lot today. Do what you love and enjoy what you do. Like that, you would be happy and healthy. You will be very successful." I was so touched ><
The last visit was with a couple who was married for 35 years. The husband who is 86 years old has diabetes and the wife who is 88 years old has stroke earlier in the year. They are so sweet and perfect for each other. The wife could not hear well and has some memory loss, so the husband would answer for her. He knows everything about her, like what she eats, her routine, her medication. The husband couldn't walk too much because of his diabetes, so she would do the household chores. What he said was so true... She had stroke so it pulled her back. People avoid talking about mental illness, but it's just the same as when you break a leg and put a cast one. You have to face your problem. Just avoiding it doesn't mean it will heal it. You need to be brave and encounter the problem.
This couple went to Hong Kong before, so they were very interested in me. By the end of the visit, the wife came up to me and touched my face saying you will be wonderful and successful in the future. God bless you and take care.
I was so touched with the kind words they said. Bless them :)
