Day 42: Day 4 in MOWI

On-going Assignment: Route of becoming a dietitian and letter
Accomplished: Motivational Interview and Volunteer route in meal delivery

It started off with an interesting presentation about Motivational Interviewing by Lynn and Sam. After studying Educational Psych last semester, I've learnt more about motivation. Motivation is really the key thing that anyone in life needs to succeed. Without motivation, you are living without purpose. They also teach us some basic and simple techniques when talking to the elders or making handouts for them. These are small, yet important things that we don't think about.

For the meal delivery, the volunteers would come to MOW, pack different lunches for different clients and then off they go for delivery. At around 10, Sotear and I followed Steve (who has been with MOW for 21 years and helped MOW find this property) for route 6, which has 8 meals. The first one we went was not there to open the door. I really hope nothing serious has happened and she is just out. Steve then had to call the office and ask one of the case workers to check up on the client. Most of these are black old people. The most memorable one was a old man sitting in his wheelchair with diapers. He is 100+ years old, but he is able to have a conversation with Steve with a clear mind. The house smells and is warm. I didn't notice anything horrible until Sotear told me afterwards that there are those roaches sound system. (I'm lucky that I didn't look around...) Another house smells like pee. To be honest, I didn't mind too much about the smell and the dim lights. I was more worried about those aggressive pets! The elders were really nice and some of them are talkative.

  1. That is amazing-- 100 years old with a clear mind. You should ask him what his secret is :)
