Day 47: Day 7 in MOWI

Tuesday lunch with interns
at Bombay Grill Indian Buffet
The food at Bombay Grill was delicious, except it was too spicy for me! I had 3 glasses of water just to handle that meal

This morning before lunch, we had our first intern meeting with the dietitians. We began with the article that Sotear prepared for us for the weekly journal club. The article is about how diet has changed from before (like LONG before) and how the western diet has affected our health. It is true that the western diet did provide some unhealthy aspect, like the refined sugar/grain, higher SFA meat, which greatly altered glycemic load, fatty acid composition, macro and micro nutrient, acid-base balance, Na-K ratio and fiber content. We discussed that the article did not talk about the increased age span (a benefit) along with these effects. Throughout the years, the western culture had offered more variety and choices of food that allow people to pick and increase their life expectancy. Also, without these, it will not be able to support/ sustain the rapidly rising population. There is not one diet (esp fad) will help you maintain or lose weight. Each diet has to be tailored for each individual because everyone's genetic makeup and environment is different.

One of the dietitian said to conclude what we learn in our major: Balance, Variety, Choices and Calories in/Calories Out to maintain weight.

Note that the article is a commentary, which uses the research to support the topic. Therefore, we need to think about the flip side of the article and both side of the issue.

After the meeting, Sherry taught us some tips and techniques in creating a cycle menu, which is one of dietitian's jobs. We learnt how to deal with shortage calls from  Lilly. We attended volunteer orientation after lunch with Nedra. Without the volunteers, MOWI will not be able to function and deliver meals; it's crazy to see more than 300 volunteers delivering 4000(?) meals everyday to different sites and locations.

p.s. This is the type of diet that we were talking about in the morning if you are interested: http://www.livestrong.com/article/290230-paleo-diet-for-crossfit/

It has been very popular lately by cutting the food processed items and grains... I don't suggest anyone taking on any type of diet that would exclude one food group. A balanced meal is the key in maintaining your health and weight ;)

Comments

  1. Processed food is not a food group.

Also, some grains (especially wheat) causes inflammation in the body (e.g. diagnosed in celiac disease, IBS, and other gut diseases).
