Day 55: Day 12 in MOWI
Today I am pleased to see the business side of MOWI at the board meeting. You can tell most of the board of directors are well-off, either retired or have a high position in the company. Some of them had been volunteers for years. It's good to see their commitment for MOWI. The board meeting was very helpful and legitimate. Everyone was so professional and formal in the way it ran in a non-for-profit organization.
I have always avoided the business side of everything; I tried to avoid taking business classes... (until I finally decided on having a certificate in Business). It is impossible to not deal with the business side of an organization. For example, MOWI needs to fundraise for a new building, so they began a new campaign called The Capital Campaign. We got to see how money is raised for MOWI. MOWI is highly regarded and has good reputation in the community, but they only get small donations, so they used a company that has many resources with big gifts and donations. The board meeting is where people update things from their committee, agree and disagree upon issues and event.
After the board meeting, we needed to attend the nutrition committee meeting. And you see the struggle that the nutrition committee has with the board meeting. What we agree and do at the nutrition committee does not mean things will be approved at the board meeting. Therefore, nutrition committee is the back support when presenting a proposal or request to the board of directors. It's sad to see that things are constrained or pulled people back because of money even when we are trying to help and better the community... No matter what we do, we still need to remember our objective of the organization which is Meals On Wheels (deliver meals).
Loving my major and what I do day by day... It's fascinating to see what I've learnt in school in the business classes is being applied and practices in the meetings I attended today. So much decisions need to be made and problems need to be solved. ex: foodservice staff complaints, portion size, clients' satisfaction, nutrition requirement cost etc.
what are some concerns of the board? 1.62 per meal seems very cost effective to me.
