Day 62: Day 16 in MOWI -- Good Morning World

On our way to work at 6:30am

- Van Cooler Count with Lilly at 7:00am
Wore the least amount of clothing possible for this activity in the garage. Thought that we were the earlier ones, I saw these food service staff were preparing the meals even earlier. We had to check the temperature of the first meal. After that, we moved to the garage and began counting the breakfast bags, numbers of all types of drinks in the cooler for each site and route. As I mentioned previously (if you have been reading), there are 8 vans going to 54 sites. Therefore we needed to go to inside the van and count for them. The purpose is to make sure that the numbers are correct. I learnt that they packed the coolers very well with a system -- multiples of 5-6. Counting may sound easy but it was not at all. One site has 117 breakfast bags and I started getting confused with the layers and how many actually is. For the drinks, you have to dig to make sure that that is chelate milk but not skim milk. HEADACHE! We did catch some mistake though-- extra OJ and missing a skim milk.

 - Temperature check with the first A meal and last A meal
After the van count, we went back to the kitchen to check the temperature of the last meal. We also need to check the temperature of two sample drinks in the van to make sure their temperature is still low enough for safety.

  - Sanitation and storage check, dry and freezer storage check in the kitchen
Lilly walked us through the storages in the kitchen. Make sure that we check the fans, things are 6 inch off the ground, correct temperature of cold storage, labeling of food, tidiness and cleaness, toilets, temperature of the water of the sink (must reach 100 degrees), hairnets etc.

  - Site visit at Saginaw with Meghan There was no site volunteer a this site, but surprisingly the volunteers were organized enough to deal everything.

  - Peer review/edit the draft of nutrition education handouts I learnt the importance of peer edit. It's important to give feedback and take feedback well. Often, people catch the silliest mistake you make and give you ideas that you would never thought about. It's a good first step to things haha. I will share the most hilarious thing once I get the picture--tells so much about the different cultures. Stay tuned!
