Day 63: Cultural difference

It's amazing to see cultural difference on this handout. This handout was prepared by Meghan, a Caucasian and was passed around to the interns for peer editing. Note the box of Ways to be green. All my friends know that I'm the greenest person possible! That's why I have a lot of tips for this topic. Instead of focusing how knowledgeable (?) I am, Sotear focused on the cultural difference... The ones typed are Meghan's and the ones written are mine. The Most Asian part will be "wash dishes by hand", "use fan instead of A/C", "use shower and not bath tub" LOL. It's true. I've never seen a dish washer in Hong Kong until I came to the states. We all know that fans conserve more energy than ever, and of course shower uses less water compared to bath tub. I guess the discussion went to a crazy and extreme point:
Buy less food --> buy appropriate --> don't eat at all! --that would save waste
Shower --> shorten shower --> don't shower at all! -- that would save water
Flush the toilet --> don't even use the toilet --> don't flush the toilet paper (that's what people in Brazil do!) -- and again, save waste.

Lesson of the story... Just don't use anything, so you would save electricity and save the world. HAHA Just joking! The fact is... don't abuse your resources just because you have them. Use things in an appropriate way and amount... and that means don't even make excuses for the word "appropriate".

ct.

p.s. When I first saw "don't preheat your oven", I laughed and thought newest technology of oven had came out that required no pre-heating at all HAHA. But it wasn't. It's impossible not to preheat before using it haha!!

  2. here in india, i am very conscious of the waste we have. because there is no garbage disposal!!!!! we burn paper, but plastics are a headache.

but the old way of living produces very little trash. when you buy take-out at a restaurant, they wrap your food in banana leaves and newspaper. biodegradable and burnable! you buy one pair of shoes and wear them until they wear out. you wash your clothes outside (no washing machine). trust me, when you have to handwash all your clothes, you have little desire to own that many clothes, lol! everything is steamed, and not baked.

when you buy lentils or spices or rice, they are wrapped in newspaper or heavy paper bags.

regarding toilet, we don't use toilet paper here.

now that we have plastics, they are reused to the end. but man, plastics are a huge problem.
